Mercedes Rivera Santa, affectionately known as Mechis, peacefully passed away at the Jack Byrne Center in Lebanon, NH on December 10, 2023 after a courageous seven-week battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Colombia April 22, 1958, she was the resilient middle child of seven siblings.

Mercedes triumphed over extreme poverty in Colombia through unwavering determination. Working during the day and pursuing her high school education at night, she became an inspiration to her siblings, embodying a "warrior" personality that reflected her internal beauty and strength.

A devoted mother, Mercedes is survived by her children, Christian Perez Rivera, and Catherine Thurston. In their formative years, she owned a general store where she instilled values of kindness and equality. Treating everyone with dignity, including the homeless, she exemplified compassion in every aspect of her life. Mercedes faced and overcame domestic violence, prompting her migration to the U.S. eight years ago after 18 adventurous years in Germany. There, she learned to ski, hike, and rock climb in the Alps.

In the last three years, Mercedes found fulfillment in the Montessori Immersion School community, working towards her dream of owning a house in Colombia. Surrounded by children she loved, bosses and co-workers who became friends. She radiated joy while residing in Lebanon with her daughter Catherine, her cherished granddaughter Sofia Thurston, son-in-law Eugene Thurston, and their beloved dog, Moose.

Mercedes Rivera Santa will be remembered as an exceptional loving mother, grandmother, friend, and hard worker. Her light shone brightly, and her legacy of love and kindness will forever be cherished by those fortunate enough to have known her.

In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donating to WISE in her name. Supporting victims of domestic violence ensures they know they are not alone, and resources are available to help improve their lives.
